20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.
CALL
The signatory nongovernmental media organizations firmly condemn the arrest of the independent journalist Ernest Vardanean by the secret services subordinated to the Tiraspol authorities.
Ernest Vardanean, politologist and former correspondent of the Tiraspol branch of the Russian Novyi Region News Agency was arrested on Wednesday, 7 April, accused of espionage and high treason, and risks from 12 to 20 years of imprisonment. On Saturday, the Tiraspol District Court decided to extend the arrest warrant on Vardanean's name for two more months.
The pressures exerted on journalists in the Transnistrian region, including through the judiciary, are not things out of the ordinary on the left bank of Nistru River. We qualify this action of the Transnistrian secret services as another attempt at intimidating journalists in the Transnistrian region.
We are deeply concerned about the fate of Ernest Vardanean who is now under arrest and we call the Moldovan authorities to do everything possible for his immediate release. Also, we call the OSCE Mission and the Russian and Ukrainian Embassies in Chisinau to use their influence on the Tiraspol authorities to determine them to set Ernest Vardanean free and to observe the basic human rights and freedoms on the territory under their control.
We call our local colleagues and those from abroad to join our solidarity campaign in view of supporting Ernest Vardanean's release from detention in Tiraspol.
