20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.

Natalia Gherman: Visa regime liberalization should facilitate Moldova's integration into Europe

Liberalization of entry visa issuance to Moldovans going to European Union member states should facilitate Moldova's integration into Europe, presumes Moldovan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman Natalia Gherman.

She told a news conference on Wednesday that the reforms currently in process and initiatives aimed at Moldova's accession to the European Union indeed pertain to Transnistrian region residents as well.

"The visa dialog is a delicate matter, which will apparently change the Transnistria residents' attitude to the Republic of Moldova. If Moldova achieves a visa regime liberalization, the Moldovan passport will become a very valuable document for every family in Transnistria to have", said Natalia Gherman.

In her opinion, the still unresolved Transnistria conflict is not an obstacle to Moldova on its way to European integration.

"The European Union regards the conflict as a common challenge to both Moldova and the EU. We try to join our efforts in resolving it by using various means, including by promoting reforms, modernizing the country, and introducing European standards, norms and values in Moldova", said Natalia Gherman who believes this is the only way for Moldova to become more attractive for citizens from the country's eastern Dniester bank.

On June 15, the EU-Moldova Association Council will convene in Luxemburg to discuss the visa regime liberalization question and stages of negotiations on creating a zone of free trade with EU countries.

Concerning cancellation of the visa regime with the European Union, the Deputy Minister said it is difficult to project any concrete timing for this, as "everything will depend on how successfully Moldova will be proceeding with the reforms already in process, and on how consistent we will be in our achieving these objectives. Besides this, much will indeed depend on the European Union's decision. So, it is of key importance to hold bilateral negotiations with EU member states".

Some time earlier, Moldovan Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Iurie Leanca stated that within 3 years Moldovans would get the right of visa-free movement to EU countries.
