20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.

Political parties can join election race from February 5

The Central Election Commission (CEC) fixed the place and time when the persons that want to run in the April 5 legislative elections can submit the documents required for being registered., 4 February 2009, 18:16

The CEC members made the decision at a meeting on February 4. The documents can be lodged between 10.00 and 16.00 on February 5 to the address: Chisinau municipality, 119 V. Alecsandri Street, office 307. From February 6, the documents will be accepted on workdays between 9.00 and 16.00.

Under the Election Code, the registration of parliamentary elections runners begins 60 days before the elections and closes 30 days before the elections.

The parties and other socio-political organizations can field candidates until the election day is set, in accordance with their statutes and the present legislation. The political parties can put forward party members and unaffiliated persons.

The individuals that want to run in elections can register as independent candidates.

The CEC secretary Iurie Ciocan said that a special commission will be set up on February 5 that will organize the first draw for the contenders that will submit the documents. The runners' place in ballot papers will be decided by draw.
