20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.

EU adviser believes transparent negotiations could resolve wine problem

Waldemar Sokaczewski, the European Union Adviser to Moldovan Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, presumes the solution of the problem of Moldovan wine exports to Russia lies in transparent negotiations.

He participated in a meeting of the EU Press Club in Moldova and stressed it is necessary to re-check the Russia-halted wines and to find out if they really meet or fail to meet quality norms. The EU expert voiced conviction that the wine quality is okay.

Sokaczewski, who directly participated in preparing Poland to accession to the EU, reminded that his native country was coming across analogous problems in its trade relations with Russia, which banned the imports of Polish meat, so he knows that "only an open dialog between authorities can resolve such a problem".

The EU Adviser presumes that the current situation with the Moldovan wine exports to Russia is a good reason to analyze things in the wine industry - Moldova's vital-importance sector, and to consolidate the Moldovan winemakers' positions on other markets.

In his words, in Central Europe, in particular in Poland, Czechia and Baltic States, consumers are giving a growing preference to wine and beer rather than to strong drinks. In the nearest years, wine consumption in Poland alone should grow by some 20%. This he believes is a good reason for expanding markets for Moldovan wines, "whose excellent quality is well known to all of us".

The EU expert called to advertise Moldovan wines in Europe more actively, and recommended to give up exporting cask wines because consumer markets in Europe demand mostly bottled wines.

Waldemar Sokaczewski reminded that Moldova had used its whole year's 2010 quota of wine exports to European Union countries yet in the first half of the year, and that Moldovan Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Valeriu Cosarciuc has already sent a letter to the European Commission asking to build up the quota.

Waldemar Sokaczewski was appointed as the EU Adviser to the Moldovan Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry in April 2010. He is one of the 10 such EU Advisers currently working in the Moldovan Government within the US$1.59 million project financed by the European Union and the United Nations Development Program.
