Moldova to ask Kazakhstan to review its decision on Ascom grup's assets

Prime Minister Vladimir Filat promised to Ascom Grup company's president Anatol Stati to talk with the Kazakhstan authorities which have nationalized its assets in 2008.

According to governmental press service, Stati said at a meeting with the Prime Minister that Kazakhstan had no legal grounds for nationalization, but the state realized it because of a respective letter sent by the Moldovan ex-President to his Kazakh colleague Nursultan Nazarbayev in 2008.

Stati said the letter was referred against Moldovan investor, and though following inspections proved pretension groundlessness, the contract of oil production was canceled. According to the entrepreneur, he went to Stockholm arbitral and is now waiting for a decision.

Filat said the Government will take measures to protect the Moldovan investor rights in Kazakhstan.

Infotag's dossier: Ascom Grup was created in 1994. Anatol Stati is its permanent chairman. The company is engaged in oil and gas production in Kazakhstan, Sudan and Iraq. Affiliated companies in Moldova are operating in agriculture, shoe and furniture production, tourism and entertainment sectors. Ascom Grup assets were about U.S.$1.027 billion, and company's equity was about U.S.$635.29 million lei.
