Moldova and Georgia can influence geopolitics in post-soviet area

"Moldovan acting President Mihai Ghimpu's visit to Georgia [on August 14-17] can influence the geopolitical things in the post-Soviet area", the popular Russian newspaper Kommersant has said.
INFOTAG, 18 August 2010, 12:58

According to the newspaper, "Georgian leader Mikhail Saakashvili and his Moldovan colleague decided to breathe new life into the GUAM which joins Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, the alliance which Moscow considers as anti-Russian".

The Kommersant does not exclude that the proposal to join the GUAM will be sent to Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko too.

Mikhail Saakashvili has demonstratively-hearty welcomed Mihai Ghimpu, who made many attacks against Russia for the last time: Moldovan leader ignored the invitation to visit the Victory parade in Moscow in May; he made the Soviet Occupation Day decree in June; he awarded with state orders "members of the terrorist group Bujor", which functioned in Transnistria during 1992 armed conflict, in August".

According to the newspaper, no document was signed during this meeting, but "the fact of leaders' meeting that has the reputation of "anti-Russian" politicians, is demonstrative, and is probably called to prove the approaching between Tbilisi and Chisinau after long-term cooling, which occurred during former communist governing in Moldova".

The Kommersant said Moscow sees no menace in the GUAM's activity recommencement. First of all, because the organization was abandoned by Ukraine which has approached with Moscow under Viktor Yanucovich's leadership and does not express any desire to provide a political support to the organization.

"Probably, Ghimpu and Saakashvili also consider Ukraine is "a weak link" of the GUAM. And that is why they do not mind to replace it with Belarus which presently conflicts with Russia", the newspaper said.

During their visit to the international youth camp at the Black-Sea littoral in the village of Anaklia, where Georgian, Moldovan and Belarusian children spend their vacation, Saakashvili said that Moldova and Georgia - are both free countries, but not fully free in territorial matter, because "a part of their territories is still in the old soviet zoological gardens".

Ghimpu drawn teenager's attention to conflicts which left in the post-Soviet area, and expressed a regret that "there exist some countries which have many lands, but it is not enough for them".

Infotag's dossier: The GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) was created on October, 10, 1997 during Council of Europe's summit in Strasburg. Uzbekistan joined the alliance during 1999 Washington summit of the NATO, but it left the GUAM during 2005 Chisinau summit because of "its excessive politicization" and "absence of economical component realization". Moldova has almost not participated in its work. All Presidents of the quadruple met last time in 2007 summer.
