Romania lowers consular gees by one-third

The consular fee rates in Romania, including for re-registering civil-status acts, have been lowered by 30%, Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Baconschi has announced.
INFOTAG, 2 September 2010, 16:30

He told an annual meeting of the Romanian diplomatic corps on Wednesday that this decision was taken in response to the persistent requests of Romania citizens, who keep on drawing the Bucharest government's attention to the current high level of fees.

Infotag's dossier: According to so-far unconfirmed estimates, the Romanian citizenship has lately been granted to some 200 thousand citizens of the Republic of Moldova, and nearly 800 thousand Moldovans have submitted documents for restoring their Romanian citizenship. By the Romanian law, the right to receive the Romanian citizenship is given to persons who used to be citizens of Romania, including those who resided in the territory of Romania before 1940 [which means the territory of the present-day Republic of Moldova and certain parts of the Odessa and Chernovtsy regions of modern Ukraine] but lost the citizenship for circumstances beyond their power, as well as to their descendants up to the 3rd generation. This means that, say, a child born in the then Bessarabia or the above-mentioned Ukrainian regions in 1939 has the right to restore his lost Romanian citizenship - together with his children and grandchildren. According to experts' estimates, over 50% of the Republic of Moldova population thus have the legal right to apply for the Romanian citizenship. The Romanian citizenship is unattainable for Moldova citizens, who have come to live here after 1944 and have no direct relatives among the local population.
