20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.

Transnistria trying on the Sudanese precedent

The Transnistrian ministry of foreign affairs is convinced that the Sudanese precedent, based on the norms of international law, will be perceived favorably by the international community, and that the referendum mechanism will remain a realistic basis for settling regional conflicts, including the dispute continuing between Moldova and Transnistria.

The ministry wrote in its statement, issued on the occasion of the international recognition of the independence of South Sudan, that the legal basis for the recognition has been the result of a referendum held there in early 2011, when 99% voters, who came to polling stations, voted in favor of the independence.

So, the referendum principle is steadily becoming a main one in the international practice of recognizing new states, wrote the Transnistria foreign ministry.

The statement authors reminded that the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic was also established by means of a referendum, i.e. "in full accordance with the USSR legislation, which was in force in this region of Europe at that moment".

The creation of the new republic was the only available legal means to defend the human rights, civil and national dignity of the Transnistrians. The people of Transnistria voted twice - in 1991 and 2006 - at nation-wide referenda for the independence of their state, reminded the ministry.

In its opinion, the referendum principle of recognizing the independence of new states is the most democratic one and, hence, the only legitimate method of resolving territorial and ethnic or religious conflicts.
