20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.

Lawmakers demand account from prime minister

Moldovan deputies have demanded from Prime Minister Vladimir Filat to come to parliament and present an account of his and his Government's activities.

Such initiative was put forward at the parliament plenary meeting on Thursday by independent parliamentarian Mihai Godea, who had been LDPM First Deputy Chairman and had headed the parliamentary LDPM faction until May 2011.

Godea also suggested hearing some ministers in the Parliament.

"Last Tuesday night, we all heard our Prime Minister's appeal to citizens. Now I guess it would be logical to hear in parliament the Government's report. We have actually quite many questions to ask Premier Filat, as well as those ministers who have been busy organizing media duels last several weeks: Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov, Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Anatol Salaru", said Mihai Godea.

He called upon all parliamentarians to present their "declarations of the conflicts of interests", so that nobody from the civil society or the media or anybody else could ever have grounds to accuse deputies of a partial attitude to this or that state agency or enterprise, or of lobbying or working against their interests.

Speaker Marian Lupu requested the Parliament Secretariat to notify the Government about the forthcoming hearings, with their date to be determined by the Parliament Permanent Bureau, but, he said, at any rate the hearing has to take place before the end of July, i.e. before the forum will go on summer recess [traditionally - from August 1].
