Defense Ministry counting on minimum 450 million lei next year

To ensure the functionality of Moldova's armed forces and provide a minimum necessary servicing to materiel, buildings and military equipment, the Ministry of Defense requires a funding in the amount of at least 450 million lei, Chief of the MoD Financial Department Vitalie Bucatari stated at the MoD Board meeting held today.

The chief military financier stressed that, as a matter of fact, this figure is 40% smaller than what the armed forces really need for normal existence and development.

Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta said that the 450 million lei will allow repaying salaries to the military, utility services, food for personnel, as well as to realize the program of professional training and army development projects.

Prime Minister Vladimir Filat said at the board meeting that the draft budget sounds as quite substantiated one, and he believes it will let the armed forces develop for the perspective. He said the Government will support all the programs and projects for army modernization, including in the sphere of professional training.

The Prime Minister believes it is expedient for the Moldovan military to further participate in international peacekeeping operations under the aegis of the United Nations or the OSCE, because this permits not only to modernize the national army and raise the professionalism of its personnel, but also positions the Republic of Moldova as a state that really promotes the creation of an efficient system of regional, European and global security.

Premier Filat stressed the Ministry of Finance is a functional agency, with a clear vision of its own modernization.

Minister Marinuta said the Ministry is preparing to present the draft National Military Strategy, which will contain concrete indicators of the development and modernization of the defense sector, including financial indicators.
