Chisinau, July 20 ( INFOTAG ). Chirtoaca was detained in the Chisinau suburban village of Bacioi in a company of Vitalie Salaru, the head of the LP's territorial Bacioi organization, immediately upon the completion of a meeting with voters there. Both men were delivered to the local police station. There, officers stated the Liberals had violated the new Code of Administrative Offenses, according to which public meetings may be held not later than till 10pm.

The Liberals regard the accusations as unfounded, for according to the regulations of the Central Election Commission pre-election meetings may be help upon agreement with and permission by local administrations, and the Bacioi authorities had permitted the meeting to be held from 8.30 pm until midnight.

The LP leadership has issued a statement saying that the detention of Chirtoaca and Salaru is an overt abuse of power by the police and an act aimed against the Liberal Party, and "we are calling upon citizens to not yield to intimidation or provocations by the police, who are behaving in such manner practically everywhere across Moldova thus trying to upset electoral meetings with LP candidates for parliament".
