20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.

A ruling by the Constitutional Court says the election of the president shall be held with at least two candidates standing, Central Election Commission chairman Ion Plesca has explained.

"A report will be presented to Parliament and the legislature shall announce a new date for the election", said Plesca, adding that the Constitutional Court will be solicited to advise.

The Communists Party, which is in opposition to the ruling Alliance for European Integration (AEI) in Parliament, said earlier it would not field any challenger to Marian Lupu, the AEI's choice, and so far the only candidate, for the post of president.
