20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.

Chisinau, December 26 ( INFOTAG ). Moldovan Minister of Reintegration Vasile Sova presumes the Transnistrian conflict must be settled only in the current format of 5+2 (Moldova and Transnistria as the conflicting sides, Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE as international mediators; and the European Union and United States as observers).

Sova met with the representatives of the mediators and observers and advised about the meeting President Voronin had with Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov in Tiraspol on December 24. The minister said Voronin and Smirnov discussed possibilities of resuming the 5+2 talks, priority steps to be made to re-launch the activities of the Chisinau and Tiraspol expert groups to build up trust and security, and measures to provide conditions for a free movement of people and cargoes between the two Dniester banks.

Sova said, "Both at the first half of that meeting, held in the presence of the mass media, and at the second half, held behind closed doors, President Voronin particularly stressed that all questions pertaining to the conflict and to its lasting settlement, including the definition of a special legal status for Transnistria with the observance of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, must be discussed within the 5+2 negotiation format".

In his words, Vladimir Voronin confirmed the Moldovan authorities' readiness to continue the experts' joint work on the entire spectrum of proposed directions, including on economy and trade, in order to work out efficient measures to overcome the socio-economic consequences of the global financial crisis.

"President Voronin highlighted the particular importance of creating conditions for a free movement of people and cargoes and of working out and realization of a program of measures for a phased demilitarization and trust building in the military sphere", Vasile Sova said.

He also said that Voronin and Smirnov "have agreed to continue the dialog and consultations to resume full-scale negotiations on a lasting settlement of the Transnistria conflict".

As your Infotag correspondent reported from the meeting last Wednesday, Voronin and Smirnov failed to achieve a more or less sound accord on any of the topical questions. Voronin was insisting on setting a date for 5+2 talk resumption, while Smirnov stated that it was not at all necessary to negotiate in that format. After a break, during which they continued discussing things tГЄte-Г -tГЄte, the two came out and announced they had decided to complete their meeting on that, to continue consultations in a format of 2+1, and to meet in mid-March next.
