To investigate the most heinous crimes of the twentieth century - genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, the international community has set up ad hoc tribunals such as the International Military Tribunals at Nuremberg and Tokyo, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia. However, genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes remain a grim reality of the world today.

219 persons punished in 2009 for human trafficking

A survey of the General Prosecution states in 2009, 219 persons were punished in the Republic of Moldova for human trafficking.

The survey specifies that of 219 persons, 48 were condemned to different terms of imprisonment, 37 - to conditional punishment, 134 persons were fined.

According to the General Prosecution, in 2009, Law Courts concluded the examination of 197 criminal dossiers on human trafficking referring to 242 defendants. 91 dossiers referred to 108 persons accused of procurement, and seven dossiers referred to ten persons that had taken children out of the country through illegal means.

Last year, 516 infringements dealt with human trafficking in the Republic of Moldova.
