20 parties have registered in the current election campaign. Many people say it is a too big number for such a small country as Moldova. At the same time, much more parties could take part in the election campaign.

Tiraspol accuses Moldova of wishful thinking

The Transnistrian ministry of foreign affairs has refuted the recent statement made by Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Issues Victor Osipov - that the official 5+2 negotiations on Transnistrian conflict settlement will allegedly be resumed before the end of this year.

The ministry wrote in its press release that at the informal meeting held in Vienna on March 1, the participants focused on creating conditions for resuming the talks, and did not mention whatever concrete timing. The ministry called upon Moldovan partners to abide by the principles agreed upon, and to avoid wishful thinking.

In the ministry's opinion, the remaining three unofficial 5+2 meetings will hardly become official ones, if proper conditions fail to be created for this.

The press release also drew attention to the fact that the Moldovan deputy premier's statements differ from the official position of the Republic of Moldova, which Osipov himself announced to the Vienna meeting participants. In particular, in Vienna the Moldovan side "officially stated its full adherence to all accords signed previously, starting from July 1992 (when the 1992 Agreement on peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Republic of Moldova's Transnistrian region was concluded) and until March 2009 (when the presidents of Russia, Moldova and Transnistria signed their Joint Declaration in Moscow). But after the Vienna meeting, Osipov stated to the press that many documents have by now become outdated and need a revision.

The Transnistrian ministry presumes that the Moldovan side's inconsistence has been caused by the pre-election processes that are beginning in Moldova these days. Also, the ministry regards as not quite normal the Moldovan leadership's recent appeal to Moscow to channel its financial assistance for Transnistria via the Moldovan budget.

"Apparently, the socio-economic crisis in Moldova has reached a critical degree, if no difference is being made between European grants, gastarbeiters' remittances and the direct assistance the Russian state provides to its citizens who have defeated fascism, and, as a consequence, attempts are being undertaken to replenish budget at whatever price", the Transnistrian foreign ministry wrote.
