Great Britain to grant 85 million lei to Moldova for paying compensations to vulnerable families

The British Department for International Development will give a grant to Moldova in the amount of 4.5 million pound sterling (85 million lei) for compensating the difference between the previous and present tariffs on public utilities for the vulnerable sections of the population.

It is envisaged by the agreement, signed on Thursday by the Prime Minister Vlad Filat and British Ambassador Keith Shannon.

After the signing ceremony Filat remarked that these financial resources will be allocated for the introduction of the new social protection system. About 250 thousand low-income families will be able to receive compensations.

The Premier said that the Government intends to implement a set of measures, aimed at improving the social protection system, providing the Moldovan citizens' wellbeing.

Ambassador Keith Shannon said that the grant will be released in two tranches. The first tranche in the amount of 65 million lei will be transferred immediately, but the remaining sum - after the assessment of the agreement terms.
