Chisinau, December 5 ( INFOTAG ). European Union member countries and the United States keep on calling upon Russia to withdraw troops from the Republic of Moldova territory. This question was discussed at the December 4-5 OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Helsinki.

The forum has gathered to discuss European security problems, particularly in the context of unresolved conflicts and of the Agreement on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE).

The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration has reported that the United States delegation drew attention to the need for Russia to fully meet its 1999 OSCE Istanbul Summit commitments on troop and arms removal from Moldova. Russia was also called to abide by the CFE main principle - that foreign troops may be deployed in a foreign country only upon the country government's consent.

On behalf of twenty-seven European Union member states, France condemned at the Helsinki Meeting the Russian Federation's decision to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The European Union voiced support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova and Georgia and for the inviolability of their internationally recognized borders.

The European Union also confirmed its support for the 5+2 format that can guarantee the achievement of a reasonable and lasting solution for the Transnistria conflict.

In Helsinki, Moldovan Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Stratan met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried, who confirmed Washington's further support for Moldova in its efforts to resolve the Transnistria problem.
